What's the difference between a Solatube® and a traditional skylight?
Traditional skylights are large openings cut into your roof and ceiling — they need structural framing changes, can leak, and often let in too much heat. A Solatube® tubular skylight is small (10″ or 14″), routes daylight through a sealed reflective tube in your attic, and reaches rooms traditional skylights can't — interior bathrooms, hallways, closets, kitchens with no exterior wall. Installs in about two hours, no drywall demolition.
How does a Solatube® tubular skylight work?
A roof dome captures daylight, channels it through a sealed, highly reflective tube that runs through your attic, and delivers it to a ceiling diffuser inside the room. The result: bright natural daylight in rooms that traditional skylights can't reach — interior hallways, bathrooms, closets, and kitchens.
Are Solatube® skylights leak-proof?
Solatube® systems use a leak-proof flashing system designed by the manufacturer. We're certified roofing contractors, so we install each unit to manufacturer specifications and stand behind our roofing work.
How long does installation take?
Most installations take about two hours. There's no drywall demolition, no painting, and no mess — we install through the existing ceiling and roof, working from above.
Do Solatube® skylight installations need a permit?
Permit requirements vary by municipality. Tubular skylights are smaller and less invasive than traditional skylights, so many towns don't require a permit at all. We check the requirements for your address during your consultation.
Are there tax credits available?
Federal tax credits may be available on qualifying daylighting and energy-efficient systems. Tax law changes year to year — consult your tax advisor for current eligibility and dollar amounts.
